Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day, October 7, 2006

Wow - what a great day! We had a whole bunch of kids come out for OMBA's Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day Oct. 7th - we got 17 on the sign up sheet but that was after the ride when some had already left.

We started out with a skit on Leave No Trace ethics presented by the cub scout troop from Ocala's Blessed Trinity Church - I especially liked the skeleton in a cub scout uniform that represented what happens when we disobey those ethics. Great job guys!

Next we took a ride on some of the trails around the Santos system. Thanks to Ashley and Pete Axson, Michelle Shearer, Carrie Miller, and Joan Bernat for helping guide everybody through! We practiced our riding skills as well as Leave No Trace ethics (by picking up trash) and trail etiquette (don't forget to clear the trail while stopped at an intersection.) There were lots of big grins!

We got back to the trailhead and enjoyed some snacks provided by Ocala Bicycle Center, Santos Trailhead Bike Shop, and Cliff Bar - thanks for supporting this event!

Afterwards anybody that had any energy left headed over to the Skills Development area for some serious fun - this is a great spot to learn how to conquer some of those tough spots on the trail like roots, rocks and log-overs. Thanks to OMBA volunteer Gary Hoel it was in perfect shape!

Thanks to everybody for coming out, we'll see you again next year and remember there are lots more opportunities for outdoor recreation on the Greenway.

Thanks,
---Valerie Naylor.
