MOUNTAIN BIKERS PUSH CONGRESS AT IMBA'S 24 HOURS OF D.C.

Mountain bikers converged in the U.S. capital April 7 for the newest 24-hour event: IMBA's 24 Hours of Washington, D.C. Attendees spent the entire day on Capitol Hill, meeting with their U.S. representatives, senators and staff to introduce IMBA and key mountain biking issues. The group's highest priority was to encourage lawmakers to support the Recreational Trails Program - a small but important program in the massive six-year transportation bill now working its way through Congress. The House has already approved a transportation bill that funds the Recreational Trails Program at $503 million over six years, however the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee's version of the bill slashes the program to $270 million over five years. More at: http://www.imba.com/news/news_releases/04_05/04_07_mtb_lobby.html

IMBA TRAIL GRANTS AVAILABLE

In 2005, a variety of IMBA cash grants are available to groups seeking to jump-start their trail improvement projects (listed below). Visit http://www.imba.com/resources/grants for details. NORBA/IMBA Trail Tune-Up Grants:

Now in its seventh year, NORBA/IMBA Trail Tune-Up Grants fund projects that create or improve trails used for mountain bike racing. IMBA/CLIF Bar Trail Preservation Grants:

IMBA-affiliated clubs are invited to apply for $500 cash grants to support trail restoration and preservation work. Projects must promote environmental education and inspire conservation in the mountain biking community. LEARN FROM WNYMBA ON HOW TO APPLY FOR AN RTP GRANT

Still uneasy about trying for a RTP grant? Well, it's easier than you think. The Western New York Mountain Bike Association (WNYMBA) recently documented their efforts to apply for a Recreational Trails Program grant in their January 2005 newsletter. IMBA clubs and patrols have gotten as little as $5,000 and as much as $1 million (over several years) from this fantastic trails program. REGISTER YOUR NATIONAL TRAILS DAY EVENTS

National Trails Day will take place on June 4, 2005, led once again by the American Hiking Society. You can register your event at http://www.americanhiking.org. Include your IMBA affiliation on the registration form. Everyone who registers a 2005 National Trails Day event receives two free NTD posters and a customizable NTD banner. If your organization has a conflict with that date, plan a day or weekend convenient for you. 70 BLM TRAIL PLANS ARE CHANGING AND SO ARE YOUR TRAILS - ARE YOU INVOLVED?

The Bureau of Land Management manages 264 million acres and 15,500 miles of singletrack trails in 13 western states. At any one time, dozens of their districts are changing their land use management plans, strongly affecting bicycling access. IMBA advocates need to be involved. BLM planning is a public process and you can have a tremendous amount of influence on existing and future trails. IMBA has a generic document that can help you file formal comments on trail plans. Call or email IMBA's Gary Sprung gary@imba.com  for coaching on how to be involved and to get a digital copy of the planning resource. Check to see if any trails near you are going through the management process. A great database of all pending plans is at: http://www.wilderness.org/OurIssues/BLM/ActionCenter/PlanningData.cfm?TopLevel=BLMActionCenter

YAHOOS MAKE PROGRESS

And finally, a few words from a non-biking representative of the South Mountain Reservation in New Jersey (a popular trail system closed to bikes in the mid 90's). "The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew presentation was very well conducted...The bikers I met are from a cohesive technological subculture, a numerous cohesive population that can readily muster large groups to bring to bear on practical and political problems. They are disciplined and easy to like; the stereotyped Yahoos of ten years ago have gone."

REGISTER ASAP - IMBA'S 24 HOURS OF WASHINGTON, D.C. – APRIL 6-7
- Deadline for discounted lodging March 7; deadline for event registration
March 21

Mountain bikers are invited to join the newest 24-hour event - IMBA's 24
Hours of Washington, D.C. The marathon will take place April 6-7, 2005 in
the U.S. capital. Register now so we can plan your meetings.

The fun begins with a dinner Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m. IMBA staff will
equip participants with talking points, handouts and lobbying advice. The
next morning, we'll hit the halls of Congress and talk to our elected
representatives and staff about key legislation and how it impacts mountain
biking. Finally, we'll celebrate our success with a Thursday evening
shindig.

The effort builds on IMBA's increased activity and leadership in Washington,
D.C. - the place where key trail management decisions are made. In 2004,
mountain bikers held more than 140 face-to-face meetings with government
leaders during the biannual IMBA Summit.

IMBA is dedicated to making the trip affordable. We'll schedule all
congressional meetings, coordinate logistics and provide plenty of free food
and drink. Attendees will need to cover transportation and lodging costs.
For more info and to register visit:

Rooms are filling fast so reserve your spot today.

NO MOUNTAIN BIKER LEFT BEHIND – HOLD MEETINGS IN YOUR HOME DISTRICT

If you can't make IMBA's 24 Hours of Washington, D.C., use the April 7
national lobby day as an excuse to schedule a meeting with congressional
district staff. Members of Congress have multiple constituent offices
scattered around your state and you can use the same talking points we are
using in D.C. Making the connection with your local offices is just as
important as in Washington and sets the stage for inviting your member of
Congress to a trail ground-breaking session or establishing a relationship
for when your next access issue looms. For more info on how to schedule a
meeting and what to say, visit:

ARE MOUNTAIN BIKERS ON YOUR STATE’S RTP ADVISORY BOARD?

The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) spends millions of federal dollars
building singletrack trails in all 50 states. Many of IMBA’s 550 affiliated
clubs have become pros at apply for and building trails with RTP funds. Each
state has an advisory board that reviews applications and decides how these
funds should be spent. Recently, the Federal Highway Administration, who
administers the RTP program, surveyed their states to see how many had
mountain bike representation versus bike path/greenways bike representation
or both. Several IMBA Reps and club leaders already serve on these boards
but many states still need IMBA advocates to get involved. Consider writing
your state’s RTP administrator and offering to help. To learn more about
the program and to see if mountain bicyclists serve on your state’s RTP
committee visit: http://www.imba.com/resources/grants/index.html

UTAH IMBA REP RYAN MILLER INITIATES RACE POINTS FOR TRAILWORK PROGRAM

IMBA Utah Rep Ryan Miller started a trailwork for points program through
Utah’s Intermountain Cup cross-country mountain bike race series. The
IMBA/ICUP Trailwork for Points Program is similar to many state’s Pay Dirt
programs and allows 30 points for four hours of volunteer trailwork. By
working with the Bureau of Land Management, USDA Forest Service and other
area land managers, Ryan started the program for racers to gain points
toward their season series total. Details at:
http://intermountaincup.com/trailmain.htm.

Congratulations also to Ryan who was recently named to the Utah Recreational
Trails Advisory Council.

MIDWEST SINGLETRACK ADVOCACY SUMMIT HEADING TO ST. LOUIS - APRIL 8-10

This year’s gathering will be held April 8-10 just 20 minutes west of St.
Louis, Missouri. The event draws trailbuilders and mountain bike advocates
from 14 states throughout the Midwest for three days of training and fun.
IMBA is a proud sponsor of the event.

Friday’s seminars, group discussions and trail demonstrations are topped off
with a Saturday bike festival and Sunday race. To learn more and register

SUBARU/IMBA TRAIL CARE CREW 2005 SCHEDULE – INVITE YOUR LOCAL LAND MANAGERS
EARLY

The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews are back on the trail and focused on an
ambitious mission to tackle more than 100 trail projects and inspire more
than 100,000 hours of volunteer trailwork in 2005. Their coast-to-coast tour
features 65 two-day IMBA Trailbuilding Schools and presentations at five
national conferences. Make sure to invite all area land mangers to
maximize this great advocacy opportunity. Full schedule:

CONSERVATION ACTIONS PERFORMED BY MOUNTAIN BIKERS

Mountain bicyclists are truly a conservation-minded group of people. We not
only enjoy bicycling on natural landscapes, we also work to protect those
landscapes from harmful development. While bicyclists are a diverse group
with many different opinions about political affairs, most of us agree that
natural places should stay natural. We particularly value places without
roads, places with narrow trails, scenic beauty, clean water, and abundant
wildlife. We'll work to maintain and even improve those qualities of Earth's
natural places.

IMBA has created a list of some of the conservation actions performed by
mountain bikers across the country and the world. This list is outdated and
we need you to send us additional examples of great work you want listed.

Add your local accomplishments to the list by emailing jenn@imba.com or
gary@imba.com. Details:

USE IMBA’S FEDERAL PARTNERSHIPS REPORT

IMBA staff just completed a 24-page, full color newsletter highlighting the
work IMBA did with federal land agencies in 2004. IMBA’s Federal
Partnerships Report captures 2004 and 2005 Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew
visits, success stories, tangible project accomplishments, and online
resources for the USACE, BLM, USFS and RTCA. A copy of IMBA’s partnership
agreement with each agency is also in this valuable advocacy handout.

Use this handout as an advocacy tool when working with your local land
management agency. It demonstrates that mountain bikers are professional and
accountable. The printed partnership agreements can open doors at the local
level and shows managers how IMBA works with their counterparts in
Washington, D.C.

Consider giving a copy to your local land managers. To get a free copy
(plus postage) of the IMBA Federal Partnerships Report visit:

IMBA MN REP TIM WEGNER APPOINTED TO AMERICAN TRAILS BOARD

Congratulations to IMBA Southern Minnesota Rep Tim Wegner for his recent
appointment to the America Trails board of directors. Tim will represent
IMBA on this prestigious board and help plan the 2006 National Trails
Symposium. Tim is avid trail builder and has successfully built and/or
negotiated trails with city, county, state and federal land agencies in
Minnesota. He is a director of the Minnesota Off-Road Cyclists
(http://www.morcmtb.org/). To learn more about Tim and MORC’s outstanding
advocacy achievements read IMBA’s recent success story at:

----

TRAILS4ALL REACHES MILESTONE - $1 MILLION IN VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Congratulations to IMBA-affiliated club Trails4All
(http://www.trails4all.org) and their executive director Jim Meyer for
reaching the $1 million mark in volunteer trailwork around Orange County,
California. Trails4All includes equestrians, hikers, mountain bikers and
trail runners. Since 1997, Trails4All has helped their strategic partners
and public agencies organize more than 14,500 volunteers to work on more
than 475 countywide trail projects by sharing and maximizing resources such
as tools, materials and experienced personnel. All together their volunteers
have logged more than 68,500 volunteer hours totaling more than $1 million
worth of volunteer services. Trails4All used an internet calculator to put
a monetary value on their volunteer work and leverage the figure as an
advocacy tool. IMBA encourages other clubs to use this great resource to
quantify your club’s trailwork:
http://www.independentsector.org/programs/research/volunteer_time.html

----

IMBA’S WILDERNESS STRATEGY

The blanket ban on bicycling in Wilderness Areas and its effect on future
trail access continues to be a focus for IMBA in 2005. IMBA is pursuing a
four-part strategy to protect access for mountain bicycling while preserving
natural areas.

IMBA believes mountain biking, a low-impact, muscle-powered recreation, is
an appropriate use of trails on public lands and is consistent with the
values of Wilderness land protection which includes recreation in natural
landscapes.

The first part of IMBA's strategy is to continue to build clout in the U.S.
capital where IMBA staff, volunteer advocates and a prominent D.C. law firm
are lobbying to influence proposed Wilderness legislation and protect
bicycle access. This includes pending Wilderness bills that would close
hundreds of miles of singletrack in California, Oregon, Virginia, Idaho and
Washington. Mountain bikers are urged to attend IMBA's "24 Hours of D.C."
April 6-7 for a targeted lobbying campaign. In 2004, bicycle advocates held
140 face-to-face meetings with government officials during IMBA's lobby day,
championing key mountain biking and Wilderness issues.

WILDERNESS PROPOSALS IN 23 STATES – GET INVOLVED

IMBA calls on all clubs, patrols and reps to get involved in their state’s
Wilderness negotiations. If you live in one of the 23 states listed, you
can’t afford not to be involved. It is essential that IMBA, cycling clubs
and individuals speak strongly for mountain biking in the early stages of
Wilderness discussions. Through education, outreach, community building,
partnerships and media relations, mountain bikers can influence and support
appropriate Wilderness bills.

Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan,
Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North
Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia,
Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming.

HOST A TRAILWORK DAY ON JULY 1 – FOREST SERVICE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

The USDA Forest Service will celebrate its 100th anniversary on July 1,
2005. The Forest Service manages 133,000 miles of trail, 155 National
Forests, 20 National Grasslands on 191 million acres of public land in 42
states.

The Forest Service has partnered with IMBA since 1988, and has worked
closely with many of our affiliated clubs for more than a decade. IMBA’s
Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews, National Mountain Bike Patrols and dozens of
our affiliated clubs regularly volunteer on National Forest land. The
Forest Service understands mountain biking and actively supports shared-use
trails.

IMBA encourages our 550 affiliated clubs to host a trailwork day or patrol
event July 1-3 (Friday – Sunday) at their National Forest or join in
existing celebrations to acknowledge all the great Forest Service
singletrack riding we have enjoyed for years. To learn more about IMBA’s

New Web Resource: Bad Things Do Happen to Good Clubs

IMBA club and patrol insurance provider Dan McKay has written an informative article that explains the steps clubs and patrols should take when facing a potential lawsuit. This is a must read for anyone affiliated with group
activities. Check it out at:
http://www.imba.com/resources/trail_issues/bad_things.html

This is also a quick reminder that IMBA-affiliated clubs can purchase
insurance from McKay Insurance that will protect the club or patrol, its
members and its board of directors from liability claims that result from
organized events such as trailwork sessions and group rides.

Dan McKay and McKay Insurance have been working with IMBA since 1995 to
protect mountain bike clubs from liability concerns. Since that time, he has
become an expert on all matters of bicycle liability and is recognized as a
supporter of trail advocacy efforts nationwide.

The schedule will be posted on imba.com in January 2005.

New Web Resource: Land Manager Toolkit

With support from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, IMBA has created an impressive online resource for land managers. The complete list of articles can be found on IMBA's website:  http://www.imba.com/resources/managers/

Please pass along this link to land managers you know in your area and use it
as away to introduce yourself to folks you would like to work with in the
future. If you have any ideas on how to improve this resource or would like
additional materials posted, email: aaryn@imba.com

"What Would We Do Without Trails Photo?" Contest Winner

IMBA's newest ad campaign features the tagline "What would we do without
trails?" and depicts mountain bike riders in improbable situations, such as
playing shuffleboard, to demonstrate what cyclists might do if there were no
trails to ride.  IMBA challenged mountain bikers to submit their own "What would we do without trails?" photograph for the chance to win a Salsa Juan Solo singlespeed mountain bike. Find out who won and view the hilarious photos from the contest here:

New Trend - IMBA Affiliated Clubs Forming Statewide Organizations

More and more IMBA affiliated clubs are coming together to form statewide organizations. There is strength in numbers and coming together to lobby for access issues and recreation funding is more effective as a team. Further, if an advocacy crisis looms, you have a network of folks who are ready to help weigh in to prevent trail closures. Forming a statewide group doesn't have to be complicated or another level of bureaucracy. In fact, most groups don't even pay dues or solicit individual members. They simply have a few representatives of each club communicating regularly on how they can work together and what state and regional issues to tackle. Talk to IMBA staff today for ideas on how to organize.

IMBA and New Mexico State Parks Memorandum of Understanding - Template for other Clubs and States

The State of New Mexico and IMBA signed an agreement to cooperate in the construction of new mountain bike trails. The agreement, signed Sept. 14, is the first of its kind between IMBA and a state park system. "This is another example of how government can work with organizations to encourage responsible use of public lands for our residents and our visitors," New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said. Under the agreement, the New Mexico parks division and IMBA will work together to identify trail opportunities, conduct training and promote mountain biking. The deal is similar to ones IMBA has with the U.S. Forest Service, National Parks Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Work started at New Mexico's Sumner Lake State Park September 14-15, where representatives from all 32 New Mexico State Parks joined the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew for two days of instruction and trailwork. IMBA encourages other states and clubs to use this as a model for partnering with their state parks or departments of natural resources and tourism agencies. Already, two other states have expressed interest. Read the Memorandum of Understanding on IMBA's website at: http://www.imba.com/resources/organizing/sample_mou_nm.html

Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open for Trail Management Plans

At any given moment America's federal land management agencies - the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), National Park Service (NPS), and U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) - are considering numerous plans for specific areas that could expand or curtail mountain bike access. State and local public land agencies conduct a similar process. This email is to ask you to make a conscious effort to seek out and comment on any plans that may affect mountain bike access in your area and state.

Every year IMBA comments on dozens of plans and helps local advocates comment on dozens more. But still many fall through the cracks. You can help by 1) signing up for all public notice lists to track activities at your local parks and forests, 2) informing IMBA of any plans you hear about, 3) writing your own comments, as an individual or representing a group, 4) getting other cyclists to make comments, 5) meeting with agency officials to discuss the plan, and 6) working the political process to influence the outcome.

IMBA has made the process easy by creating a document that can greatly help you to ask questions and formulate a position. We call it our "generic scoping comments." It was originally written for the U.S. Forest Service's general plan revisions, but, with some modifications, it has applicability almost everywhere. You can call or write us to request a digital copy. This document includes 90 percent of the arguments you need to advocate for mountain bicycling in your area. All you have to do is customize it to the particular trail system and insert the specific trails requests you are championing. As an official IMBA representative, we can supply you with plenty of IMBA stationary to submit it on letterhead. Or you can submit it in conjunction with the local IMBA affiliated club.

Thank you for your help in this very important matter. IMBA's comments could impact thousands of mountain bicyclists a year. Saying the right thing to the right people at the right time, could mean literally hundreds of miles of new trails. Thank you for helping impact our sport's future. For a copy of the scoping comments email brandon@imba.com or gary@imba.com.

IMBA's 24 Hours of Washington, D.C. - Save the Date!

IMBA is asking mountain bikers everywhere to join the newest 24-hour event - IMBA's 24 Hours of Washington, D.C., which is your chance to give something back to the sport. The marathon will take place April 6-7, 2005 in our nation's capital. The goal is simple: create an awareness of access and recreation issues and convince them that mountain biking deserves their support. The fun begins Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m. where IMBA staff will equip participants with talking points, handouts and advice for the meetings. The next morning, we’ll hit the halls of Congress and talk to our elected representatives and staff about key legislation and how it impacts mountain biking. Finally, we’ll celebrate our success with a Thursday evening shindig. IMBA is dedicated to making the trip affordable. We'll schedule all your congressional meetings, educate you about lobbying techniques and provide plenty of free food and drink. You or your club will need to cover transportation and lodging costs. For more info email jenn@imba.com.

IMBA Launches Campaign to Thank Land Managers

This holiday season IMBA is encouraging its grassroots advocacy network to send thank you notes to land managers to show appreciation for their tireless work on trails. We have created complimentary IMBA note cards and encourage you to ask your state's advocates to send these cards to local trail staff and the people that make mountain bike access possible.

To request free IMBA note cards please complete the following form. If you have any questions please email zach@imba.com or call 1-888-442-4622.

To learn more about IMBA's Thank You campaign visit: http://www.imba.com/news/news_releases/11_04/11_11_thanks.html

Tell Us About Your "New Trails Near You"

One of the best ways for IMBA to track progress is by the trails that your state clubs and organizations help build, re-open or preserve. Further, if you have an example of creative partnerships, overcoming obstacles, and other successful projects please let us know. No matter how long or short, we want to hear about it. Your story could be used in a future article in IMBA Trail News or on the IMBA website. It will also and give your state some excellent exposure.

Use our online form and fill out the applicable questions that best describe your state's success story. This can be found at: http://www.imba.com/resources/conservation/new_trail_success.html

40th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act - Do You Know What Proposals Are Pending in Your State?

Many state and national Wilderness organizations are using the 40th anniversary of the Wilderness Act as a reason to promote Wilderness bills and reinvigorate a movement to protect more land. As you know, Wilderness land protections ban bicycle use and IMBA is working in several states to propose alternative land projections and boundary adjustments that will accommodate cycling and prevent trail closures. It is important that all IMBA clubs know what their local Wilderness groups are doing and we encourage you to attend meetings, sign up for eNewsletters and join organizations. Mountain bicyclists and Wilderness proponents have a lot in common and by reaching out and learning about pending proposals, it can go a long way in preventing trail closures.

ADVOCACY SUCCESS IN HOUSTON

Houston, Texas has long been a battle ground for mountain bike access. In 2001 IMBA rated Houston the worst city for trail access in the country. Things have changed dramatically in the past four years. Thanks to outstanding work from local advocates and the IMBA-affiliated club Greater Houston Off-Road Biking Association (GHORBA), mountain bikers have become valuable partners for city land managers, and have gained access to miles of new trail. Check out a recent story about the Houston mountain biking success from the Houston Chronicle at http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/3125617

MORE SUCCESS IN NEW JERSEY

Similar to Houston, New Jersey has been an area of contention for mountain bikers for more than a decade. A 2000 article in Outside Magazine presented a scene where cyclists and anti-mountain bikers were one step short of fisticuffs. While there is still a lot of work to be done, things are much, much better just a few years later. For the full scoop check out this recent article in a prominent New Jersey newspaper: http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1111905582189710.xml

HELP SAVE FANTASY ISLAND

The amazing trail system in Tucson, Arizona, known as Fantasy Island is threatened by development. Mountain bikers are urged to support the Fantasy Island Conservation Alliance and the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists who are leading the critical effort to save these trails. http://www.savefantasyisland.org

WORLD MOUNTAIN BIKE CONFERENCE

The North Shore Credit Union World Mountain Bike Conference on Sustainability will take place June 1 - 3, 2005, in North Vancouver, BC, Canada. Join IMBA and other mountain biking leaders for three days of education, networking and discussion covering the environmental, social and economic issues surrounding mountain biking. IMBA Canada is a sponsor. http://www.nsmbfc.com/conference

MOUNTAIN BIKING TO CONTINUE AT NISENE MARKS

A legal settlement has been reached between California State Parks and a group of citizens who sued to ban mountain biking in Nisene Marks State Park near Santa Cruz, California. http://www.imba.com/news/news_releases/04_05/04_11_nisene_open.html

IMBA TRAIL GRANTS AVAILABLE

In 2005, a variety of IMBA cash grants are available to groups seeking to jump-start their trail improvement projects (listed below). Visit http://www.imba.com/resources/grants for details. Kona/IMBA Freeriding Grants: IMBA-affiliated groups in North America can apply for seven $1,000 awards to support the development of freeriding, downhilling, and dirt jumping projects. The application deadline is May 1, 2005.

NORBA/IMBA Trail Tune-Up Grants: Now in its seventh year, NORBA/IMBA Trail

Tune-Up Grants fund projects that create or improve trails used for mountain bike racing. The $500 grants can also be used to improve trails for race training and recreational riding, but race courses receive the highest consideration. Applications are due by June 1, 2005.

IMBA/CLIF Bar Trail Preservation Grants:

IMBA-affiliated clubs are invited to apply for $500 cash grants to support trail restoration and preservation work. Projects must promote environmental education and inspire conservation in the mountain biking community. Forty grants totaling $20,000 have been distributed since the IMBA/CLIF Bar Trail Preservation Grants program was established in 2001. The application deadline is July 1, 2005.

SEATTLE'S BACKCOUNTRY BICYCLE TRAILS CLUB IS HIRING

Do you dream of a day when the Pacific Northwest has as many mountain bike trails as hiking trails? Join a team who can make it happen. Seattle's Backcountry Bicycle Trails Club is hiring a paid, part-time Volunteer Director. They are also seeking volunteers to help with advocacy and marketing. Details: http://www.bbtc.org

SUPPORT IMBA'S LEGAL DEFENSE FUND

Sadly, those who oppose mountain biking still pressure public agencies to restrict our sport. Sometimes the precise, powerful voice of top-notch attorneys is the only way to effectively counter unwarranted accusations that "mountain bikers are killing the forest!" But this work is also expensive, and we need your help. Stay tuned to your mailbox for IMBA's Legal Defense Fund campaign. When you receive our letter, please return your donation as soon as possible. Contributors of $30 or more will receive a limited edition "Free the Trail" t-shirt.

2) NEW TRAILS NEAR YOU

WAKEFIELD PARK - FAIRFAX COUNTY, MARYLAND

IMBA Trail Solutions and the Mid Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts (MORE) built six-miles of chitty-chitty-bang-bang, grin guaranteeing singletrack in Wakefield Park, Maryland. The new trail is a reroute that avoids an old Civil War battlefield and critical amphibian habitat. More info: http://www.more-mtb.org

LAKE NORMAN STATE PARK - STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA

Bring your rigid single speed and give the new 6.8-mile singletrack at Lake Norman State Park a go. This trail is butter-smooth, making it perfect for beginners and more advanced riders looking to get into that singletrack trance. The trail, built by trail building legend "Water Bob" Karriker, is very well marked with signs and blazes. Plans call for construction of four additional miles. For more info contact Water Bob at 704-872-0121.

SYLLAMO, YELLOW LOOP - MOUNTAIN VIEW, ARKANSAS

The recently completed Yellow Loop adds 12-miles of pristine trail to the existing 22-mile Syllamo Trail system. The new trail is part of a U.S. Forest Service Sylamore Ranger District's plan to build a 75 miles shared-use trail system. The Yellow Loop features a rolling, bench-cut trail winding through limestone outcroppings. This trail is great for advanced riders - especially when conditions turn "slippery when wet." For more info contact the Sylamore Ranger District at 870-269-3228.

MOAB, UTAH

If you haven't been to Moab in awhile, you might want to make a return visit. Thanks to the efforts of the Moab Trails Alliance (MTA), new singletrack is being built to compliment the plethora of existing jeep roads. According to the MTA website, "Because many of our existing trails were originally created for motorized travel, Moab is severely lacking in singletrack opportunities that are the main attraction for many outdoor enthusiasts." The group is working to change that. New trail has been built - including the Sovereign Trail and singletrack built with assistance from the Subaru/IMBA Trail Crew near Klondike Bluffs - and more is on the way. 1) INTRODUCTION

Dear IMBA Member,

Happy New Year!

In this issue of the IMBA Singletrack Update, we highlight a host of new
trails in the midwest and southeastern United States. In light of recent
tragic events in Sri Lanka as a result of the December tsunami, we take a
look at a link between mountain biking, IMBA and Sri Lanka. Finally, we
introduce the IMBA 24 Hours of Washington, D.C. - you're all invited! If you
don't want to receive these monthly updates, and would like to be removed

2) NEW TRAILS NEAR YOU

EAST FORK TRAIL - CINCINNATI, OHIO

Lots of new singletrack is being built near Cincinnati, Ohio. The Cincinnati
Off-Road Association (CORA) is working with Ohio State Parks on a three
phase trailbuilding plan that will eventually result in 15-25 miles of new
shared-use trails at East Fork State Park. Phase 1 and 2 of the project call
for a reroute of an existing, unsustainable trail. This phase will be
completed in January and will add 10 miles of new trail. Phase 3 of the
plan, which will begin in February, will add an additional 10 to 15 miles
and open new areas of the park to bikers and hikers. "The club, with support
from the community and park management, has made great strides building a
trail system that will be a shining star for Cincinnati," said Robert Brock
of CORA. Get involved at: http://www.cora-trails.org

SEVEN OAKS MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL - BOONE, IOWA

Racing can provide great trails for mountain bikers to enjoy every day. Case
in point, the Seven Oaks Mountain Bike Trail near Boone, Iowa. This trail,
located on the Seven Oaks Ski Hill, has been used as a race site since the
late-1990's, but only offered a couple miles of singletrack. Thanks to the
success of a 24 hour race, and the demand for more trail the Irwin's/Toyota
of Des Moines Bike Team worked with land managers to expand the trail
system. In 2004 this club helped construct approximately four miles of trail
with plans to build more than 15 miles more in the next three years. More

LAKE LURLEEN TRAIL - TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA

In 2002, Alabama State Park Ranger Mike Storm solicited volunteers to build
a new trail at Lake Lurleen Park. The Druid City Bicycle Club responded in
mass, building 5.5 miles of sweet new singletrack. The club also got help
from the local Sigma Nu fraternity chapter, who cleared an additional 1.5
miles of old, neglected trail. The old trail connects to the new trail to
provide mountain bikers a great system in this previously under-utilized
park. More info: http://www.druidcity.org

VALLEY BRANCH RETREAT - NASHVILLE, INDIANA

Valley Branch Retreat is a privately owned facility that has some of
the best trails in Indiana. The area features 30 miles of trail through
1,000 acres of forest. The facility was started from the ground-up by avid
mountain biker Gary Bartels and his family six years ago. The trail system
is very well marked, featuring designated easy (green), intermediate (blue)
and expert (black) trails. The area has hosted numerous mountain bike races
in the past few years. More info: http://www.valleybranchretreat.com

3) SUCCESS STORIES OF THE MONTH

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA: ADVOCATE WORKS TO BRING MOUNTAIN BIKING TO SRI LANKA

In light of recent tragic events in Sri Lanka as a result of the December
tsunami, we wanted to point out a link between mountain biking, IMBA and Sri
Lanka. This connection was forged this summer, when Nishanthe Piyasena from
Sri Lanka attended the 2004 IMBA Summit in Washington, D.C. Full story:

MARYLAND, VIRGINIA, WASHINGTON, D.C.: MORE DESIGNATED 2004 ADVOCACY GROUP ON
THE MOVE

When IMBA designated the Mid-Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts (MORE) the
"advocacy group on the move" in the 2004 IMBA Report Card it was based on
sheer energy as much as anything. Take Scott Scudamore, the '04 MORE
president, for example. There are a lot of words to describe Scott, and meek
isn't one of them. Scott exudes the energy of a 14-year-old hopped up on Red
Bull. His boisterous, friendly demeanor will wake you from a slumber, and
make you want to do something, darn it. Scott is one of many MORE volunteers
who have an infectious passion for mountain biking. Full story at:

WEST VIRGINIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA TOP 2004 IMBA REPORT CARD

For the first time, a state east of the Mississippi River has taken
top-honors in the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) Report
Card. West Virginia received the highest grade in the 2004 edition of IMBA's
annual survey of mountain biking. Internationally, British Columbia retained
its position from last year as the ultimate global mountain biking location.
New Jersey received the lowest grade this year because of crowded trails,
strong, anti-mountain biking opponents and trail-user conflicts. Full story

5. IMBA CALENDAR AND GEAR SALE

1) INTRODUCTION
Dear IMBA Member,
Here in the Rocky Mountains winter has arrived, with sub-freezing temperatures and enough snow that local mountain bikers have stored the bikes for a few weeks in favor of cross country skis. Meanwhile, in the southern U.S. and other parts of the world, this is the best time to hit the trails. At IMBA things are as busy as ever, as many of our affiliated clubs do much of their advocacy and trailwork in the winter when it doesn't conflict with prime riding season. In this issue of the IMBA Singletrack Update, we'll let you know about some key happenings in the mountain bike advocacy and trailbuilding world. If you don't want to receive this update, and would like to be removed from IMBA's email list, simply email membership@imba.com with a subject line REMOVE.
Happy Holidays,
The IMBA Team

2) NEW TRAILS NEAR YOU
LITTLE RIVER TRAILS - DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA
The brand new Little River Trail near Durham, N.C. is opening this Sunday, Dec. 5 and you're invited to be one of the first to ride it! The trail, located in the Little River Regional Park, approximately 12 miles north of Durham, is only for mountain bikes. The Durham Orange Mountain Bike Organization (DOMBO) meticulously built this 6.5-mile singletrack to IMBA guidelines during the past two years. "This is the first trail in the area designed from the ground up as a sustainable trail," said DOMBO trail  construction coordinator Stewart Bryan. The trail features rolling singletrack for intermediate riders, and tighter, more technical sections for advanced cyclists. More info:
http://www.dombo-nc.org

RAY'S INDOOR MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK - CLEVELAND, OHIO
Could indoor mountain biking be the next big thing? If the popularity of indoor rock climbing and skateboarding is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes. Ray's Indoor Mountain Bike Park, brainchild of Cleveland mountain biker Ray Petro, is built inside a 66,000 square foot warehouse. The park offers plenty of stunts, jumps and ladder bridges to freeriders. It also has beginner and intermediate trails for cross-country riders to get in a few miles of riding during the ice-cold Cleveland winters. The park has a cool vibe, with music playing, pine trees painted on the walls and seats made of stumps. The park opened for use at the end of November, following a grassroots construction effort by mountain bike enthusiasts thoughout the Cleveland area. More info:

WARM SPRINGS LOOP - HEALDSBURG, CALIFORNIA
The Warm Springs Loop is a sweet 20-mile singletrack located in Lake Sonoma Park managed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The trail was originally built about 10 years ago, but received little use or maintenance. The original stewards of the trail, the Backcountry Horseman, recently approached IMBA-affiliated clubs Bicycle Trails Council-Marin and the Sonoma County Trails Council for maintenance assistance on the route. Both clubs agreed to adopt the trail, installing IMBA signs and scheduling regular trailwork days. More info:

CENTRAL PARK FREERIDE AREA - FORSYTH, GEORGIA
This trail isn't completed yet, but we're so stoked about it we decided to include it anyhow. Using info from the IMBA Freeride Guide, the Roswell Alpharetta Mountain Bike Organization (try saying that ten times fast) - or RAMBO as they are more commonly known - put together a stellar proposal for a new freeride park. "We have the unique opportunity to build and maintain the first true freeride area in the state of Georgia that is in partnership with the land owner," said club president Bob Grieco. Construction on the park is taking place throughout the winter. Get involved at:

3) SUCCESS STORIES OF THE MONTH
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA: INDIANA MAKES BIG STRIDES IN '04
After receiving the worst grade in the 2003 IMBA Report Card, a paltry D+, Indiana mountain bike advocates have successfully used the grade as leverage to convince land managers to give mountain bikers new places to ride and build positive momentum for the future. The Hoosier Mountain Bike Association and Indiana IMBA Rep Jonathan Juillerat showed the low grade to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources last winter, persuading them to allow mountain biking in Versailles State Park and Brown County State Park.

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA: MORC GOES ON SINGLETRACK BLITZ IN TWIN CITIES
The Twin Cities have historically been a paradox for mountain bikers. There's an established cycling culture, lots of natural areas nearby and an active population. Oddly enough, however, the Twin Cities were severely lacking in legitimate trails for mountain biking not so long ago. In 2000 IMBA gave Minnesota a C grade, citing "Not enough riding near Twin Cities" as the state's downfall. City officials were hesitant to accommodate mountain biking because of concerns about environmental and social impacts. Thanks to tireless work from local advocates, IMBA Rep Tim Wegner and the Minnesota Off Road Cyclists (MORC), things have improved drastically. Full story at:

4) IMBA ADVOCACY NEWS

NEW MEXICO AND IMBA FORM GROUNDBREAKING PARTNERSHIP

The State of New Mexico and IMBA have signed an agreement to cooperate in the construction of new mountain bike trails. The agreement is the first of its kind between IMBA and a state parks system. "This is another example of how government can work with organizations to encourage responsible use of public lands for our residents and our visitors," New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said. IMBA LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO THANK LAND MANAGERS

This holiday season, IMBA will mail thousands of thank you notes to their grassroots advocacy network as part of a campaign to thank land managers for their tireless work on behalf of trails. IMBA hopes all mountain bikers will take a moment to thank local trail staff and the people that make mountain bike access possible. IMBA AWARDS 100 REI/IMBA OUTDOOR STEWARDSHIP TOOLKITS

Mountain bike groups coast-to-coast received an unprecedented boost for their volunteer trailwork projects, as a result of a financial and gear grant from Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI). For the second consecutive year, IMBA and REI awarded outdoor stewardship toolkits to select mountain bike clubs nationally for the purpose of building and maintaining trails. This year's $45,000 REI grant nearly doubles the amount of last year's award, and increases the number of toolkits from 50 to 100. IMBA ANNOUNCES ONTARIO TRAIL IMPROVEMENT GRANTS

Mountain bike groups in Ontario will soon benefit from a new grant program

dedicated to improving trails. The program is a partnership between the

Ontario Cycling Association (OCA) and IMBA's Canadian office. In 2005, a

percentage of every full OCA membership will go toward creating, maintaining

and preserving trails across the province. Three $500 grants will be awarded.

BAGPIPER WINS IMBA CONTEST

A photo of a mountain biker playing the bagpipes alongside a quartet of traditionally-attired pipers has been selected the winner in IMBA's "What would we do without trails?" contest. IMBA's newest ad campaign features the tagline "What would we do without trails?" and depicts mountain bike riders in improbable situations, such as playing shuffleboard, to demonstrate what cyclists might do if there were no trails to ride. The contest encouraged mountain bikers to stretch their creativity and submit their own "What would we do without trails?" photograph. 2) NEW TRAILS NEAR YOU
MATSON HILL TRAIL -- DEFIANCE, MISSOURI
This newly constructed three-mile trail is the first phase of a system that will eventually yield 15 miles of new singletrack near St. Louis. The IMBA affiliate Gateway Off-Road Cyclists (GORC) worked with St. Charles County to design and construct this trail. With GORC's volunteer support, the trail was built at no cost to the parks department. More info:
http://www.kellerhayes.com/gorc

MONTGOMERY BELL PARK -- DICKSON, TENNESSEE
This new trail features 12.5-miles of quick, twisty singletrack on rolling hills. IMBA affiliate Harpeth River Bike Club worked with Tennessee State Parks to "hammer out some truly good mountain bike trails," according to IMBA Tennessee rep Sam Poyner. The club and state parks also used volunteer labor and matching funds to build a trailhead parking lot. More info:

3) SUCCESS STORY OF THE MONTH
DALLAS, TEXAS: DORBA PROVES URBAN TRAIL ACCESS WORKS
The Dallas Off Road Bicycle Association, or DORBA as they are more commonly known, is one of the best and biggest clubs in the world. Everything in Texas is big, and DORBA is no exception. According to club president Cindy Bradley, DORBA is the "largest metroplex mountain bike club in the U.S." DORBA, which was founded in 1988, has 780 paid annual members. What's the key to their sizeable membership base? DORBA relies on three main tools: word of mouth, bike shop promotion and a regular ride schedule. "We host group rides every Wednesday night, including no-drop rides," said Bradley. "The no-drop rides are key to getting new folks involved. They diminish the dividing line between new people and existing folks." Full story at:

WHITEHORSE, YUKON REVEALS MASSIVE POTENTIAL
Durango. Whistler. Fruita. Whitehorse? The first four are established mountain biking destinations. The last entry - the imposter - Whitehorse, may have more diverse and abundant riding options than any of these other "meccas." Whitehorse is the capital city of the Yukon Territory, which sits way up north in Canada. To most lower 48 folks, the Yukon's claim to fame is a couple of books written by Jack London, Call of the Wild and White Fang, about sled dogs, wolves and the Klondike gold rush. Unbeknownst to most fat tire enthusiasts is that the Yukon has one of the most amazing mountain biking trail systems anywhere in the world. Full story story at:

4) IMBA ADVOCACY NEWS
CONGRESS HONORS MOUNTAIN BIKING
In an effort to get kids more active and help fight childhood obesity, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution officially declaring "National Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day." The legislation is in memory of Jack Doub, a teenage mountain biker from North Carolina. Promoted by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), National Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day encourages adults and cycling clubs to introduce kids to the sport of mountain biking. The day is scheduled for the first Saturday of October each year. Full story at:

IMBA TESTIFIES IN FRONT OF CONGRESS
The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) testified in front of Congress on September 14 regarding a proposed Oregon Wilderness bill. IMBA board member Chris Distefano spoke before members of a subcommittee of the Senate Natural Resources Committee in Washington, D.C. explaining how the bill would impact mountain bikers. While IMBA supports the preservation of primitive public lands in an undeveloped condition, the Wilderness designation bans bicycles. "IMBA is committed to representing mountain bikers at the highest level of government," said IMBA government affairs director Jenn Dice. Full story at:

MIKE VAN ABEL HIRED AS IMBA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Mike Van Abel, a former national vice president for the American Diabetes Association, has been selected to head the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA). Mike was picked from a field of more than 350 candidates, following a nationwide search conducted by T. Malouf & Company. He replaces long-time IMBA executive director Tim Blumenthal, who recently assumed the top role at Bikes Belong, the bicycle industry's trade association. Full story at:

IMBA OPENS CANADIAN OFFICE
Located in the town of Collingwood, the office is staffed by Ontario natives Mark Schmidt and Lora Woolner. Both are three-year veterans of the award-winning Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew and are widely respected for their trailbuilding and advocacy knowledge. Founded in California in 1988, IMBA has focused on U.S. issues, but has also provided steady Canadian support. The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew, IMBA's flagship field program, has paid regular visits to Canada for the last eight years. Full story at:
